Visiting can be cancelled for lockdowns, weather or count problems. Call the facility the day before you travel.

Dress code

  • No transparent clothing, halter tops, short shorts, mini-skirts, culottes, or excessively tight-fitting clothing
  • Shoulders must be covered and no exposed cleavage; shorts/skirts no more than 6 inches above the knee
  • No bare feet (except babies); no open-toe footwear (flip-flops/sandals)
  • No ball caps, hats, or bandanas (religious headwear excepted)
  • Male visitors may not wear clothing resembling inmate uniforms (khaki pants/shirts)

You may bring

  • Valid driver's license or other state/government photo ID (for visitors 16+)
  • A clear wallet or change purse (max 5x8x4 in) with money and ID only
  • For infants: 4 diapers, 2 sealed containers of processed baby food, 3 baby bottles (milk/formula/juice), 1 crib-size baby blanket, in one small paper/plastic diaper bag (also used for feminine hygiene items)

Not allowed

  • Balloons, gum, candy, food, toys (including dolls/toy weapons), newspapers, magazines, or books
  • Legal material (unless pre-approved), baby carriers, regular (non-clear) diaper bags, or cosmetics
  • Writing instruments, tobacco products, photographs, pagers, cell phones, or remote door-lock devices
  • Packages, gifts, or papers of any kind for the inmate
  • Cameras, radios, or recording equipment of any kind

Good to know

ID requirements
Visitors 16 and older must show a driver's license or other state/government photo ID. Visitors under 16 accompanied by a parent/legal guardian are exempt.
Children
Children under 16 may not visit unless accompanied by a responsible adult on the approved visiting list. No limit on the number of children under normal operations; the inmate and visitors are responsible for supervising them.
Vending machines
Only visitors buy from vending machines; purchased food for an inmate must be taken out of its packaging and placed on a paper plate before it can be consumed. Inmates and visitors cannot share food or drinks.
Money you may bring
No cash is accepted for inmate accounts. Visitors may carry a clear wallet/change purse (max 5x8x4 in) with money and ID only, for their own use.
  • Do not arrive on the grounds before 8:00 a.m.; visitors arriving after 1:30 p.m. will not be processed
  • Motel/restaurant reservations near Ray Brook (a resort area) are recommended, especially in peak tourist season
  • FCI Ray Brook is a smoke-free institution
  • Visitors may only be processed into the visiting room once per day per inmate; you cannot leave and return the same day without advance Warden approval
