Visiting days depend on their housing unit

The main FCI visits Saturday, Sunday, and holidays for everyone. The FDC (detention) side follows a weekly-rotating schedule by housing-unit assignment, posted on the unit bulletin board - confirm the current rotation locally.

Rotation: Covers both the FCI and the FDC. FDC visiting follows a weekly-rotating schedule by housing-unit assignment (posted on the unit bulletin board / in the A&O handbook) — confirm the current unit rotation locally. Due to space limits, each visit is capped at 2 hours; visitors are blocked from entering 9:30-10:00 a.m. for the Saturday/Sunday/holiday count.

Special Housing Unit (SHU)

  • No visiting: Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, Sat, Sun
No visiting on federal holidays

Rotation: FCI SHU inmates visit on Fridays (2 hours, or 1 hour if other SHU inmates are waiting). FDC SHU inmates follow the same pattern unless the FDC Unit Manager and Captain approve special arrangements. Other SHU visiting days need Captain approval.

Visiting can be cancelled for lockdowns, weather or count problems. Call the facility the day before you travel.

Dress code

  • No halter, midriff, deep V-neck, backless, or sleeveless tops/dresses
  • No spandex/form-fitting clothing or low-cut/hip-hugger pants; nothing above mid-calf
  • No skirts/dresses more than 3 inches above the knee; no fatigues/camouflage
  • No khaki-colored clothing (resembles inmate wear) or orange (resembles SHU inmate wear)
  • No see-through garments, including plain white T-shirts you can see skin/undergarments through
  • No hats, ear muffs, doo rags, scarves, or non-prescription sunglasses
  • No flip-flops, slippers, thongs, house shoes, bare feet (except infants), or sagging pants
  • No gang-related colors, insignias, or representations

You may bring

  • Valid state or government photo ID (driver's license, passport, or other) for visitors 16+
  • One clear plastic bag/container (max 12x24 in) with: handkerchief, empty sippy cup, sealed feminine hygiene products, up to 4 diapers, a clear diaper bag, 2 plastic milk/formula bottles, baby lotion/ointment, baby wipes in a clear bag, and 3 sealed baby food jars
  • Up to $30 in $10-or-smaller bills plus coins, for vending machines

Not allowed

  • Newspapers, magazines, games, toys, strollers, or infant car seats
  • Any food or drink items/containers brought from outside
  • Radios, tape players/recorders, cameras, cell phones, or personal paging devices
  • Packages, gifts, or papers exchanged with an inmate
  • Any item given directly to an inmate (visitors return unauthorized items to their vehicle or the visit is denied)

Good to know

ID requirements
Visitors must show a valid state or government-issued photo ID (driver's license, passport, etc.); it is held by the control room officer during the visit and returned on departure.
Children
Visitors under 16 accompanied by a parent or legal guardian are exempt from the photo-ID requirement. Children must be controlled and not allowed to wander; a Parenting Center and outdoor playground are available at the FCI (none at the FDC). Kids under 10 may wear shorts at the Front Lobby Officer's discretion.
Vending machines
Vending machines are available in the visiting room for visitors. Inmates may not remove commissary items, currency, or handle money at any time.
Money you may bring
Up to $30 total, in bills of $10 or less plus coins (the document's main body raised this from a prior $20 limit; an older, unrevised attachment still lists $20 — use $30 as the current figure)
  • FCI/FDC Tallahassee are tobacco-free institutions; smoking is only allowed 25 feet from the entrance doors
  • Standard taxi fare from Tallahassee airport is about $15; Tal-Tran city bus runs 7 a.m.-10 p.m. for $0.75
  • Do not loiter in the institution parking lot
