Visiting days depend on their housing unit

Social visiting is assigned by housing unit/floor, each with its own fixed day and time block (for example, Unit 5-East visits Tuesday and Saturday, Unit 7-West visits Monday and Saturday). Ask which unit your inmate is housed in to know their visiting day.

Before you book anything, ask your loved one which day and time they're assigned — by phone, email or letter — and confirm it with the facility. The calendar shows every possible visiting day at this facility, not necessarily theirs.

Special Housing Unit (SHU)

Rotation: Special Housing Unit inmates visit Monday only (no weekend visiting), one hour, either the morning or evening block. If the visit is held inside the SHU itself, minors are not allowed.

Points / frequency: Each inmate is authorized 4 hours of social visiting per month, one hour per visiting day, on their housing unit's fixed schedule. Unit 6 (cadre) inmates are not charged points. Approved 'special visits' for long-distance visitors also draw from the inmate's visitation points unless waived.

Visiting can be cancelled for lockdowns, weather or count problems. Call the facility the day before you travel.

Dress code

  • No shorts, sleeveless tops, halter/tube tops, or backless tops (except children up to age 7)
  • No sweatpants, sweatsuits, leotards, crop tops, or low-cut/see-through clothing
  • No hats, caps, wigs, headscarves, hairpieces, or sunglasses
  • No spandex, tights, or clothing with holes
  • No extra coats, jackets, or windbreakers
  • No khaki or plain white t-shirts, or anything resembling inmate/staff uniforms
  • Bra required for women; no tight or sexually suggestive clothing
  • Shoes required for everyone except infants

You may bring

  • Valid government photo ID (driver's license, state/military ID, or passport) for anyone 16 or older
  • Small clear purse or bag no larger than 12x12 inches
  • Up to $25 in bills no larger than $5, for the vending machines
  • Diapers, formula/baby food, a change of clothes, and a blanket for infants
  • Signed Visitor Information form (BP-629) if bringing a visitor under 18

Not allowed

  • Cell phones, cameras, or any recording/electronic devices
  • Gifts, packages, food from outside, or money for the inmate's account
  • Tobacco products of any kind
  • Watches, jewelry (except a plain wedding band), or extra coats/jackets
  • Strollers, diaper bags, or baby supplies beyond what's authorized

Good to know

ID requirements
Visitors 16 and older must show a valid state or government photo ID (driver's license, passport, military ID, etc.); foreign IDs need supporting documentation (visa, passport with I-94). IDs are scanned at entry, and a backup ID may be requested if the scan doesn't work.
Children
Children under 16 must be accompanied and supervised by a responsible adult; those under 18 don't need to be on the visiting list but do need an approved adult escort, and a parent or legal guardian must sign the Visitor Information form (BP-629) for them. Infants/toddlers held the entire visit don't count toward the 2-visitor limit.
Vending machines
Vending machines are available in the visiting room for food and drinks.

Up to $25 total, in bills no larger than $5 each, carried in a small clear purse
  • Each housing unit has its own fixed visiting day and time — check which one applies to your inmate
  • Processing begins 30 minutes before the visiting session starts
  • The visiting room has a maximum capacity of 270 people; arrive early on busy days
  • There are no public pay phones at FDC Miami — arrange your own transportation
  • Long-distance visitors (over 250 miles or from a foreign country) can request an extended 'special visit' in advance
