Points / frequency: No formal point system; each inmate is guaranteed a minimum of 4 hours of visiting time per month, and is not limited in the number of visits she may receive (subject to space/overcrowding limits).

Visiting can be cancelled for lockdowns, weather or count problems. Call the facility the day before you travel.

Dress code

  • Shorts and sleeveless shirts are allowed; shorts must touch the top of the knee, and shirts must not reveal undergarments
  • No tube tops, tank tops, hats, caps, sunglasses (unless prescribed), do-rags, or muscle shirts
  • Female visitors must wear a bra; no miniskirts, halter tops, or see-through clothing of any kind
  • Sundresses are permitted if not revealing
  • No open-toed shoes for any visitor
  • Any clothing considered revealing or possibly offensive to other visitors is not allowed

You may bring

  • Driver's license or valid state/government-issued photo ID
  • One clear plastic purse/bag, no wallets, not to exceed 12"x12"
  • One baby carrier; one clear plastic diaper bag (12"x12")
  • Baby food (1 container), baby bottles (1), unopened baby formula/milk (2 containers)
  • Baby lotion, baby powder, small blanket, baby hat, change of infant/child clothes, diaper rash ointment (1 each)
  • 10 baby diapers, 1 package of baby wipes, 1 baby toy
  • Only life-saving/prescription medication is allowed and must be kept at the Officer's Station: nitroglycerin, albuterol inhaler, and EpiPens only

Not allowed

  • Tobacco products of any type
  • Cell phones, handbags (must be locked in visitor's car)
  • Cameras (personal cameras are not permitted; a paid inmate-photographer service is available)
  • Any item given to or from an inmate without prior written approval (except vending-machine food)

Good to know

ID requirements
Staff verify identity via a driver's license or valid state/government-issued photo ID; visitors without photo ID will not be allowed to visit.
Children
Inmates and visitors are responsible for children's behavior in the Visiting Room; repeated misbehavior can result in the visit being terminated. A dedicated Children's Center (capacity 42) is available, and inmates are allowed inside it with their approved children.
Vending machines
Inmates and visitors may purchase and share snack-machine items; the inmate uses her commissary card for the vending machines. Visitors may not leave money or money orders for the inmate, and inmates may never handle money.
  • FPC Alderson is remote with no pay phone service; arrange transportation before the visit
  • A nursing/privacy screen is available in the Children's Center nursery for breastfeeding
  • Inmate visitors continue to be processed during the institutional count, just delayed while officers complete the count
